Japanese manufacturing firm Packwell/NP Chang’s. broke ground recently for its first manufacturing plant in the Philippines, and fifth overall worldwide. Their first Philippine plant will be located within the PEZA accredited, Anflo Industrial Estate (AIE), in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
Earlier this year, Packwell/NP Chang’s acquired a 16,000 square-meter area in the estate and is set to employ more than 200 workers in the region as soon as its production facility begins operations in 2021. Construction of the factory will start in January next year and is set to finish by the 4th quarter of 2020.
Ricardo F. Lagdameo, AIE First Vice President, is confident that Packwell’s presence in the estate will entice other Japanese investors to follow suit.
“We are bullish that the presence of Packwell/NP Chang’s in AIE will help spur more interest from other Japanese and foreign investors. This is a very good development not only for AIE but for the Davao region,” said Lagdameo.
According to Packwell/NP Chang’s, they particularly chose Philippines as the location of its fifth manufacturing facility across Asia because of the good quality and inexpensive labor force in the country. They further decided to locate in AIE because of its strategic location.
“We want to transfer our hand-made box-line to [AIE],” said Chang Anqi, Sales Officer for Packwell/NP Chang’s. The existing production of hand-made boxes is done in their factory in China, where, she explained, labor cost is much higher. “China is very strict, while Philippines is welcoming to foreign production companies,” Anqi added.
According to Anqi, the country’s continuing improving economy helped prompt them to set up a factory in the Philippines as well.
“As the Philippines’ economic scene is getting better, we decided to bring the production here,” expressed Anqi.
The Anflo Industrial Estate is the leading industrial park in the Davao Region and is home to 15 locators represented by 5 nations. The 63 hectare industrial park in now currently under development for its third phase.
Packwell, Inc is a Japanese-based company that manufactures paper-based packaging and containers. It is also the 11th locator to have inked a deal with AIE.
